WHAT IS AN EXFOLIATING SCRUB?
Exfoliating is the process of removing the dead skin cells from the body, so your newer, fresher skin cells are left at the top. Your skin is left feeling smoother, softer and looking much more radiant.
INGREDIENTS:
Brown Sugar: 1 tsp
Virgin Coconut Oil: 1 tsp
METHOD:
Mix both ingredients together until you have a soft consistency. You will then apply the brown sugar and coconut oil skin exfoliating scrub to your face gently in circular motions. Keep rubbing the ingredients into your face in circular motions for 2-3 minutes. Feel Free to also use it on your lips because this EASY DIY face scrub can also be used a lip scrub. Once you are done, wash your face with Luke warm water. (Optional) You can also use a small amount of a moisturizing cleanser to wash off any sugar residue the water may have missed. This will also help in dissolving some of the coconut oil left on your face in case you prefer to not have coconut oil left on your face.Once this is done, use a towel to pat dry your face.
BENEFITS:
Brown Sugar Benefits :
Brown sugar is a natural humectant. It draws moisture from the environment and transfers it to the skin. It serves as a natural moisturize which keeps the skin soft and at the same time hydrated. It is a source of glycolic acid which is the smallest alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA). Because of its smallest size, these molecules can penetrate deep into the skin. It loosens the bonds of skin cells, and promotes new cell growth. As brown sugar exfoliates dead cells from the outer skin and hydrates the skin, it gives the skin a shiny glow.
Coconut Oil Benefits:
Coconut oil is a powerful moisturizer that is beneficial to restoring dry or flaking skin. Unlike your average moisturizer that contains a lot of water and likely synthetic ingredients, coconut oil helps to strengthen skin tissue more deeply and eliminate dead skin cells while absorbing quickly into your skin.Coconut oil also helps to delay the occurrence of wrinkles because it contains antioxidant Vitamin E, known to protect skin cells from damage over time. The Vitamin E found in coconut oil soothes eczema, sunburn and psoriasis, and its antiviral and antifungal benefits even help to treat bug bites.
WHAT DOES “COMEDOGENIC” MEAN?
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, a “comedo” is an “acne lesion”, a hard blockage created from an excess of sebum in a pore. This blockage can lead to whiteheads, blackheads and pimples, so “comedogenic” refers to ingredients or products that have a tendency to block pores and promote comedones (plural of comedo), or acne.
Comedogenicity ratings are how various oils and emollients are categorized based on the degree to which they’re likely to clog your pores. Or, in simpler terms, comedogenic oils have a higher tendency to produce or aggravate acne and blackheads, whereas non-comedogenic oils are less likely to produce such issues.
The Comedogenic Rating System
0 – Will Not Clog Pores
1 – Low
2 – Moderately Low
3 – Moderate
4 – Fairly High
5 – High probability it will clog pores
If you have acne prone skin it is best to stick with a comedogenic rating of 1 or 0.
COCONUT OIL: Level 4
RECOMMENDED RECIPE SUBSTITUTE: Shea Butter
SHEA BUTTER: Level 0
Shea butter has a comedogenic rating of 0, which makes it an excellent substitute for those with acne prone skin.
Shea Butter Benefits:
Shea butter is a skin superfood that comes from the seeds of the fruit of the Shea (Karite) tree and that is naturally rich in vitamins A, E and F. It offers UV protection (it is SPF ~6) and provides the skin with essential fatty acids and the nutrients necessary for collagen production.
