What is vegan? Many people automatically think of beatniks, hippies, and nomads, but vegans are business women, hard working men, musicians, actors, and everyday people like you and me. Strictly speaking veganism is abstaining from consuming all animal products. In practice, this is very personalized, creating a wide spectrum of vegans. On one end there are ethical vegans who reject all use of animal products, including honey, leather, and cosmetics that use animal testing. There are raw vegans who do not cook anything they eat. Environmental vegans fall somewhere in the spectrum too, eating mainly plant-based foods because animal products damage our planet. On another end of the spectrum are those who simply dislike meat. And then there are those who are vegan for the health and nutritional aspects of this lifestyle. Veganism is becoming more mainstream. Any worry of deficiencies can be overcome with proper planning and some supplementation. There are many proven health benefits. Vegans are less likely to be overweight, obese, develop heart disease, have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, develop type 2 diabetes, get colon or prostate cancer, develop cataracts, or even have bone fractures.
