Spanish plant-based food tech company Heura has renewed its B Corp certification, achieving an improvement of 18% since its first certification in 2021.
Heura now has a rating of 111 points, taking the top spot in the food products category for businesses with a turnover exceeding €1 million. It also ranks third nationally for companies with more than 50 employees.
Heura has seen particular improvement in the area of sustainability, achieving a huge 58% increase in its rating due to an ambitious ESG strategy. Since 2021, the company has reduced its environmental footprint per kilogram of product by 23% and its CO2 emissions by 83% compared to animal-based proteins.
“Our goal is to revolutionise the food system with technologies and products that enable consumers and industry to make positive impact choices,” said Marc Coloma, CEO and co-founder of Heura Foods. “Putting planet, health, and other animals ahead of profit is the only way to create a sustainable model over time.”
“Industry must lead the change”
The news comes less than a month after Heura announced the opening of a new innovation laboratory in Barcelona. The company also revealed plans to register six new patents in 2025, focused on replacing additives, modified starches, and saturated fats with vegetable proteins and healthy lipids.
Last year, Heura announced its intention to expand beyond plant-based meat, with the aim of improving nutritional density and transforming foods often labelled as ultra-processed. The company also reported that its turnover had reached €38.3 million in 2023, while international sales rose by a huge 63%.
“The current food system is unsustainable. It generates $12.7 trillion in externalities annually, surpassing the global food production value by 1.4 times, and is responsible for 34% of global emissions, with more than half coming from animal agriculture,” said Coloma. “We cannot place the entire responsibility on consumers. The industry must lead the change and take accountability for its negative impact.”
